On Monday, March 23, the Santiago Canyon College (SCC) science department's faculty and staff were honored with the Board President’s Award for their enthusiasm and passion for teaching astronomy, earth science/geology, physics, chemistry and biology.

Above, Board President Dr. R. David Chapel (right) presents the Board President's award to the SCC science department representatives Debra Brooks (center), professor and chair of the Earth Science/Geology Department, and Cindy Swift, assistant professor of physics.

The SCC science department has provided students and the community with learning opportunities outside the classroom through invited guest speakers and hosting the annual Community Science Night event. Each fall since 2006, faculty and staff volunteer their time to provide an evening of fun science activities for thousands of children and their parents. They feel that engaging a child's curiosity and instilling a love of science in these future college students is vital.
